Diabetic Eye Exams

Diabetic Eye Exams

The eyes are the only place in the body where we can see blood vessels directly inside the body.  Eye care professionals can see the first signs of diabetes affecting the body if it is not under control enough because diabetes can damage the small blood vessels throughout the body and we can see this directly in the back of the eye in the form of bleeding. The bleeding is the start of diabetic retinopathy which can impair the vision if it becomes serious enough.

That is why we work closely with physicians to monitor and manage diabetes. If the small blood vessels in the eye are being damaged and leaking then the kidneys are probably being affected too since it has many small blood vessels. It is also why all people with diabetes or borderline diabetes should have the health of their eyes checked routinely to see if it remains under control similarly to how blood tests every 3 months are recommended.

The BC CareCard helps cover diabetic eye health checks every 6 months to promote these routine eye exams. At Aldergrove Optometry, feel free to contact us directly to book a diabetic eye health check.
