Concussions

Concussions

Concussions are like a bruise to the brain that can’t be detected by MRI or CT scans but can have a multitude of long lasting effects since the brain controls virtually everything in the body. Many people take up to a year to fully recover from post-concussion syndrome but sometimes the effects of severe concussions can last over a year and become life-altering.

Eye-related symptoms of post-concussion syndrome: light sensitivity especially to fluorescent lighting, loss of balance and often leaning more to one side, decreased spatial awareness so you accidentally bump into objects more often, difficulty following and tracking moving objects.

Other symptoms of post-concussion syndrome: sleep issues, anxiety, tinnitus (ringing in the ears), aggression, headaches, neck pain, depression, memory issues, speech dysfunction, teeth grinding, hormonal issues, mental fogginess

It can take a team of health care professionals from different fields to help someone recover from a concussion and optometry plays a role too and can help some of the eye-related symptoms. We will work with your family doctor and may also recommend seeing a physiotherapist, psychologist, dentist, endocrinologist, audiologist, vision therapist, or neurologist depending on the person’s symptoms. Dealing with concussions can be complex and frustrating, but start the road to recovery by contacting us today.
